The past few years have seen a resurgence in D&D board games, with everything from head-to-head skirmish games like WizKids’ Onslaught to city building strategy titles like Builders of Baldur’s Gate and the upcoming mapping game Edge of the Realms. Most of these have games have been well received by both Dungeons & Dragons fans and board game aficionados alike, earning solid reviews and sales.
Now, the award-winning puzzle and board game maker Ravensburger has announced a D&D version of their popular Horrified series. Coming in the summer of 2025, the co-operative game involves players rescuing villagers, collecting treasure and facing down iconic D&D monsters.
So just what else can fans expect when Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons hits shelves? Below, we scare up all the details.
What is the original “Horrified” board game about?
Horrified is a cooperative board game from German-based game company Ravensburger in which you and your fellow players work to protect a small town from a group of monsters (in the original version of the game, this included the classic Universal Studios monsters of Dracula, The Wolfman, The Mummy, Frankenstein, the Bride, the Invisible Man and the Creature from the Black Lagoon). Each player starts by choosing a hero who has special abilties and a certain number of unique actions. On your turn, you then move around the board collecting items and escorting villagers to safety. After your turn ends, a monster card is drawn to determine how the enemy creatures move and attack. Each monster also has its own puzzle to solve, such as destroying Dracula’s coffins, guiding a boat to the Creature’s lair or collecting the Mummy’s scarab tokens. If you’re able to complete this objective, you win the game. A Terror Track at the top of the board, however, is updated each time you suffer a defeat. If the Terror Track reaches the end before you’re able to defeat the monsters, the game is over and you lose.
In many ways, Horrified is quite similar to the popular board game Pandemic, in that players can go in any order they want, have a wide range of actions to choose from and are essentially racing the clock to complete key objectives. Notably, after the success of the initial Horrified, Ravensburger released several other versions, including Horrified: World of Monsters, Horrified: Greek Monsters and Horrified: American Monsters
What’s included in the “Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons” board game?
While many of the details are still under wraps, we do know that the game will incorporate a 20-sided die (something which is not used in any of the previous Horrified games). It’s also been announced that one of the monsters will be a Beholder (as seen on the recently unveiled box art), although it’s not clear what other iconic D&D monsters will be included.
In an interview with Polygon, Mike Mulvihill, a game development manager at Ravensburger noted that: “It is an honor to merge the historical and awesome worlds and themes of Dungeons & Dragons with the immersive cooperative play that we crafted with Horrified. We believe we have created a board game that will please both dedicated fan bases.”
When is the “Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons” board game coming out?
The game is slated for release in the summer of 2025. Notably, it was first announced at the London Toy Fair in January 2025. It’s possible the release date may change due to manufacturing and scheduling, but it will likely be available for order both online and in local game stores around this time (with an exact date to be confirmed in the next few months).
How much is the “Dungeons & Dragons Horrified” board game?
The game will retail for $29.99 USD, which is actually a fair bit cheaper than other Horrified titles, which have a price point of around $45 USD. It’s not clear if this is because the game has fewer features, or if it’s simply a revised price point designed to capture interest from new players.
Final Thoughts
The Horrified game series has a solid reputation – including a ton of positive reviews on Board Game Geek – and the addition of Dungeons & Dragons sounds like it’s being treated as more than just a reskin, with mechanics, monsters and thematic elements that capture the essence of what makes D&D so fun. It remains to be seen what the final product is like, but for now, it sounds like a solid monster mash up.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on the Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons game in the days ahead and will update this page with more information as it becomes available.
